Kisii Horror: 5 Dead, Several Feared Trapped After 4-Storey Building Collapses in Suneka

A peaceful Sunday in Kisii turned into a nightmare after a four-storey building collapsed in Suneka on April 6. The incomplete structure caved in near Itierio Mixed Primary School, crushing nearby houses and trapping several people.

Eyewitnesses described loud cracks before the building gave way. Within moments, a cloud of dust rose as screams pierced the air.

Lives Lost, Others Still Missing

So far, five people have been confirmed dead. One victim died while being rushed to hospital, while four were pulled lifeless from beneath the debris.

Rescue teams have managed to save five others who were rushed to nearby hospitals. However, the exact number of those still trapped remains unknown.

The building was under construction and housed several workers. It also bordered residential homes, increasing fears that more victims remain buried.

Rescue Efforts Underway

As panic spread, Kisii County emergency response teams rushed to the scene. The Kenya Red Cross Society also joined the mission, helping to coordinate search and rescue operations.

“Kisii County emergency rescue teams have arrived at the disaster scene in Itierio, Suneka, where scores are feared trapped following the collapse of a storey building. Businesses around the area have been affected, with reports of looting,” a rescue official said.

With daylight fading, responders battled time and rubble. They used shovels, bare hands, and machines to dig through collapsed walls and broken beams.

Looting Adds to the Tragedy

As the chaos unfolded, some individuals took advantage of the disaster. Reports of looting in nearby shops prompted police intervention. The authorities increased patrols to secure the area and prevent further crimes.

Meanwhile, affected families stood by the rubble, watching with hope and fear. Many broke down in tears as the rescue teams pulled out bodies.

Cause of the Collapse Still Unknown

Although investigations have begun, the cause of the collapse remains unclear. Residents suspect poor construction standards, which have become common in fast-growing towns like Kisii.

Angry locals are demanding answers. Many now call for stricter building inspections and accountability from developers.

As the sun sets on Kisii, the rescue mission continues. Hope remains, even as grief spreads.
