Nakuru Residents Demand Answers on Governor Susan Kihika’s Prolonged Absence
Nakuru residents have taken matters into their own hands, demanding answers over Governor Susan Kihika’s prolonged absence from office. Frustrated by five months of silence, they have submitted a petition to the County Assembly, seeking an official explanation.
Residents Demand Accountability
The petition, signed by over 2,000 concerned citizens, calls for the governor to clarify who is currently in charge of Nakuru County. Kihika was last seen in public on November 18, 2024, and has since maintained that she is on maternity leave. However, residents now demand proof.
“We are exercising Article 15 of the County Government Act of 2012. It allows us to publicly petition on matters of public interest, specifically the absence of Governor Kihika,” said Kimori Evans, a resident.
Leadership Vacuum Sparks Concerns
Residents argue that Kihika’s absence has created a leadership crisis. They accuse County Secretary Samuel Mwaura of taking over roles meant for Deputy Governor David Kones, further deepening confusion.
“The governor caused the power struggle between Mwaura and Kones because she failed to provide clear communication. We need her to tell us who is leading the county,” Kimori added.
Frustration continues to grow as decisions are made without the governor’s presence. Many feel the lack of transparency is unacceptable and want the county government to provide clarity within 14 days.
Maternity Leave or Political Excuse?
On January 17, Kihika issued a statement confirming that she was on maternity leave and would return soon. However, over two months later, she remains absent. Residents question why she did not delegate responsibilities before leaving.

“She should have made an official announcement before going on maternity leave. Instead, she only addressed the issue after residents started demanding answers,” Kimori noted.
Speculation escalated last week when photos and videos surfaced showing Kihika in the United States with her husband. Some residents now believe her absence is more than just maternity leave.
Despite the backlash, a section of residents has defended Kihika, arguing that every mother is entitled to maternity leave. They urge patience, insisting she has a right to time off like any other Kenyan employee.
Legal Woes Add to the Controversy
Adding to the chaos, Kihika was recently sentenced to six months in jail for contempt of court. She allegedly failed to comply with a court order regarding a land dispute.
Her legal team plans to appeal, arguing that the ruling is politically motivated and excessive. The case has sparked heated debate, with some questioning whether she will be able to continue leading the county.
What Happens Next?
As Nakuru residents wait for an official response, uncertainty looms. Will the governor return and address their concerns? Or will the leadership crisis deepen? The County Assembly has 14 days to respond, but for now, the people of Nakuru remain in the dark.
