Roots Party Nominates Caleb Sunguti for Malava By-Election after Malulu Injendi’s Death
The Roots Party of Kenya has nominated Caleb Sunguti as its candidate for the upcoming Malava Constituency by-election. If elected, Sunguti will make history as the first Member of Parliament (MP) under the party’s banner.
The by-election follows the unfortunate death of former Malava MP Malulu Injendi, who succumbed to a long illness. Party leader and presidential aspirant George Wajackoyah announced Sunguti’s nomination, expressing confidence in his leadership.
Wajackoyah Endorses Sunguti
Wajackoyah confirmed that Sunguti had undergone thorough vetting in line with Chapter Six of the Kenyan Constitution. He emphasized the nominee’s integrity and ability to serve the people effectively.
“Roots Party of Kenya settles on Caleb Sunguti for Malava by-election. The first Roots Party parliamentary candidate. Vetted and verified by Chapter Six,” Wajackoyah stated.
Who is Caleb Sunguti?
Sunguti boasts an impressive academic and professional background. He holds a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree, an MBA in Project Planning and Management, and extensive experience in governance, leadership, and public affairs management.

He has served as a Business and Finance lecturer at Kitale National Polytechnic and KCA University. Before that, he worked as a manager at Telkom Kenya Limited and later as a senior lecturer at the Kenya School of Government, Lower Kabete Campus.
With over 25 years in public service, Sunguti promises to bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to Malava Constituency.
Roots Party Confident in Victory
The Roots Party expressed optimism about Sunguti’s chances, emphasizing his leadership qualities and dedication to the people. The by-election is expected to be competitive as multiple parties prepare to field candidates for the vacant seat.
Other Constituencies Still Unrepresented
The Malava by-election highlights a broader issue—three other constituencies remain unrepresented due to a lack of a fully constituted Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The affected constituencies include Banisa, which has lacked representation since March 2023 after the death of MP Hassan Kullow. Magarini has been unrepresented since March 2024 when the Supreme Court nullified Harrison Kombe’s election.
Ugunja Constituency also became vacant in July 2024 following the appointment of Opiyo Wandayi to the Cabinet.
As the Malava by-election approaches, all eyes will be on Sunguti and his competitors. Will the Roots Party secure its first parliamentary seat? Only time will tell.
