Mudavadi Urges Petitioners to Withdraw Cases Blocking IEBC Reconstitution
Bungoma County, Kenya — Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has made an impassioned plea to petitioners halting the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). Speaking during an interdenominational prayer service in Mt. Elgon, Mudavadi stressed the urgency of resolving the legal hurdles to pave the way for IEBC reforms.
Delays Threaten Electoral Preparations
Mudavadi highlighted the significant impact of delays caused by court cases on the reconstitution process. He clarified that the government is not at fault, emphasizing, “It is not the government of Kenya that is delaying the reconstitution of IEBC. The government did not move to court; a section of Kenyans did, which is their right.”
Acknowledging the rule of law, Mudavadi urged patience, adding, “We must follow the rule of law, and that is what President Ruto is doing. Why not allow the courts time to sort out this matter?”
Petitioners Under Scrutiny
Mudavadi expressed frustration with those filing the court cases, noting their identities are well known. He promised to address the issue with the individuals at an appropriate time. His remarks come amid mounting concerns over regions lacking elected representatives due to an inactive IEBC.

“We are now telling the petitioners who took the cases on IEBC reconstitution to court to withdraw them,” Mudavadi urged. “This will allow the President room to exercise his constitutional powers and spearhead the reconstitution process as soon as possible.”
Need for a Functional IEBC
Mudavadi reiterated the importance of a fully functional IEBC for effective election management. He pointed out that the prolonged delays threaten preparations for the 2027 General Election. Key activities such as boundary delimitation and voter registration are at risk if the commission remains in limbo.
“The IEBC commissioners need to be appointed early enough to ensure smooth election preparations,” he stated.
NADCO Report Delayed
Mudavadi also referenced the NADCO report, which provides a roadmap for appointing IEBC commissioners. Unfortunately, differing opinions have delayed its adoption into law, further complicating the reconstitution process.
As the clock ticks toward 2027, Mudavadi’s call underscores the need for swift action. His plea for petitioners to step aside echoes the broader concern for ensuring the country’s electoral systems are ready well in advance.
