Nairobi Traffic Alert: Mombasa, Lang’ata Among Roads to Face Disruption on Sunday Ahead of CHAN 2024

Nairobi motorists should brace for serious traffic disruptions starting Sunday, August 3, as the city hosts the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN). The much-anticipated tournament kicks off with Harambee Stars facing the Democratic Republic of Congo at the revamped Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Already, Nairobi Traffic Police have raised the alarm and shared vital updates on road closures and diversions.

“We are closing some major roads to ensure smooth movement for teams, officials, and fans,”
said Nairobi traffic police boss Joseph Chirchir.

He confirmed that Aerodrome Road, from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout, will be shut off to all vehicles.

Additionally, Lang’ata Road will suffer partial closure between Madaraka and Lusaka roundabouts, especially on match days.

“Only emergency vehicles and those with special passes will be allowed through restricted zones,”
Chirchir added.

Moreover, Mombasa Road will experience a partial lockdown from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout, affecting access to Nyayo Stadium.

Diversions Announced

To minimize delays, police have recommended alternate routes. Vehicles coming from Mombasa Road to the CBD should now divert to Likoni-Enterprise Road at General Motors, then access the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni.

“We urge all motorists to use the provided routes to avoid being stuck in unnecessary traffic,”
advised the traffic boss.

Motorists on Lang’ata Road are advised to switch to Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road through Mbagathi Roundabout.

From the CBD to Juja or Thika, use Limuru Road or Kiambu Road, which are expected to be less congested.

For fans heading to Kasarani Stadium, matatus should now take the Ruaraka Baba Dodo and Ngomongo roads, easing pressure on the main Thika Road corridor.

“The Ruaraka route will significantly reduce congestion heading into Kasarani,”
said Chirchir.

Those heading from Thika Road into town are also urged to take the Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road.

City Urged to Cooperate

With thousands expected to attend the games, authorities have urged Nairobians to plan ahead.

“We all want to support our team, but let’s also support the city by following traffic instructions,”
Chirchir emphasized.

The CHAN tournament, while a source of national pride, is set to stretch Nairobi’s transport system. Kenyans are now left to balance between patriotism and patience on the roads.
