Nairobi, Kenya – April 16, 2025
Motorists using the ever-busy Mombasa Road should brace for serious delays. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a three-month traffic disruption starting Saturday, April 19.
Why the Disruption?
According to KeNHA, this long-awaited move is crucial. It allows engineers to install fabricated footbridge beams near the Katani Road Junction. The footbridge aims to boost pedestrian safety.
“KeNHA wishes to notify the general public that a section of Mombasa Road (A8) near Katani Road Junction will experience traffic disruption along the Mombasa-bound lanes,” read part of the public notice issued on Wednesday.
This closure will stretch until Sunday, July 20, from 10pm to 6am daily, affecting Mombasa-bound traffic.
How Will It Affect Motorists?
KeNHA is not leaving motorists stranded. The authority has rolled out a detailed traffic management plan to ease the disruption.
“We advise motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plans and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” urged KeNHA Director General Kungu Ndungu.
Alternative routes provided include Syokimau Airport Road, Katani Road, and Kiunguni Road.
Still, with Nairobi’s congestion already high, frustrations are expected to spike. Many drivers, especially daily commuters and long-haul truckers, are likely to feel the brunt.

Plan Ahead – Or Be Stuck
To avoid long queues and confusion, KeNHA has urged drivers to plan their trips early, use diversions, and remain calm during the period.
The authority has also placed traffic marshals and police officers at key points along the affected roads to guide motorists. Their presence is expected to minimize confusion and help maintain flow.
This Isn’t the First Time
This move comes just a month after Nairobi experienced heavy traffic due to dignitary visits and the Safari Rally.
Now, with another major road project underway, Nairobi residents are bracing for yet another test of patience.
