Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna Responds to Makau Mutua’s Call for His ODM Resignation
Drama unfolded on Wednesday, August 20, after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna hit back at Professor Makau Mutua. The legal scholar had called for his resignation as the ODM party’s Secretary-General.
Makau Mutua Demands Resignation
Makau Mutua, a close ally of ODM leader Raila Odinga, fired the first shot. Through a post on social media, he declared that Sifuna could no longer hold his position honorably.
“My good learned friend and Senator Edwin Sifuna appears to be in an UNTENABLE position as SG of ODM Party. It seems to me that the honorable thing for him to do if he’s a man of principle is to resign his post, which rarely happens in Kenya, unless one is sacked,” Mutua stated.
His remarks sparked heated reactions within ODM and beyond.

Sifuna Fires Back
In a sharp response, Sifuna dismissed Mutua’s words as hypocritical. He did not mince his words when pointing to Mutua’s new state role.
“You have the unenviable task of determining the value of the lives of the young people your new friends killed and compensate their families,” Sifuna retorted.
The Senator added that Mutua should focus on his appointment instead of meddling in ODM affairs.
“One would imagine that crown to be so heavy as not to allow the wearer time for anything else, let alone worrying about the SG of ODM, who isn’t even your friend,” he added.
Sifuna’s statement directly referred to President William Ruto’s recent appointment of Mutua as the coordinator of the state framework to compensate victims of protests.
Internal ODM Wrangles
Sifuna’s post came at a time when his loyalty within ODM has been under scrutiny. Recently, his public remarks have raised eyebrows among party members.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, he openly criticized governors allied to ODM.
“It is not the governors who have been misadvised. It is the governors who are misadvising our national leaders. It is the governors who have misadvised my party leader,” Sifuna claimed.
Such statements have exposed him to fresh criticism from ODM loyalists who demand discipline and unity.
Growing Rift in ODM
The question remains: will Sifuna hold his ground, or will ODM push him out?
