Ex-Siaya County Assembly Clerk Felix Isaac Olwero Shot Dead by Police in Suspected Mistaken Identity
Grief and anger rocked Seme, Kisumu County, on Monday morning after police shot dead former Siaya County Assembly Clerk, Felix Isaac Olwero. The 50-year-old died outside his Whitehouse Resort in what police now admit was a suspected case of mistaken identity.
Night of Confusion
According to police reports, officers from Kombewa Police Station rushed to the resort after a distress call. The call came from the manager, Sandra Okech, who reported a suspected break-in.
When officers arrived, they sealed off the back of the property. Shortly after, six men emerged from a nearby thicket, allegedly armed with pangas and crude weapons.
Police claim one man charged at them. One officer fired a shot. Moments later, the lifeless body on the ground was identified as Olwero, the resort owner, who had stepped out to investigate.

Police Justify Their Actions
Speaking about the incident, Kombewa Subcounty Police Commander defended the officers’ response.
“The officers believed the individual was part of the armed gang. It was later established he was the owner,” the commander said.
Family and Residents React
The killing sparked outrage across the community. Relatives and residents accused police of recklessness and failing to confirm before shooting.
“They should have verified before opening fire. You cannot just kill an innocent man,” a shocked resident told reporters.
Olwero’s family was devastated, describing him as a responsible leader and a loving father.
“He was a father, a mentor, and a man of integrity. We want justice,” one family member cried.
Community in Mourning
Olwero was well-known in both Siaya and Kisumu counties. His sudden death left colleagues, friends, and former political associates in disbelief. Many described him as a man who always fought for fairness.

His body was later taken to the Kombewa Subcounty Referral Hospital mortuary. A post-mortem is expected as part of the investigations. Police have not confirmed whether any of the suspected gang members were caught.
Calls for Justice
The shooting has raised serious questions about police conduct and accountability. Leaders and residents are now demanding a transparent probe.
For many, one painful question remains unanswered: how could a man protecting his property end up killed by those sworn to protect him?
