Motorists Association Slams EPRA Over Fuel Prices: “A Slap in the Face of Kenyans”

The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) has launched a scathing attack on the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA). This came just hours after EPRA announced minimal fuel price reductions.

“Yesterday’s fuel price review, coming on the back of last month’s insulting one-shilling drop, is a slap in the face of hard-working Kenyans,” MAK stated. “It is an affront to motorists and to the Kenyan public at large.”

EPRA reduced super petrol by Ksh0.79, diesel by Ksh0.11, and kerosene by Ksh0.80. In Nairobi, the new prices stand at Ksh184.52 for petrol, Ksh171.47 for diesel, and Ksh154.78 for kerosene.

MAK Demands EPRA’s Disbandment

MAK didn’t mince words. They called for EPRA’s immediate dissolution and a return to a transparent, market-based pricing system.

“As MAK, we will not stay silent,” the association declared. “We demand the immediate disbandment of EPRA and either a return to the transparent ERC formula or a reversion to a free market.”

They argued that EPRA’s monthly reviews are designed to keep motorists anxious and confused.

“This monthly circus only conditions the public to accept exploitative, unpredictable price hikes,” MAK added.

A Broken System Since 2013

According to MAK, the problem began in 2013 when the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) was scrapped. Back then, fuel pricing followed a scientific formula, openly discussed and accessible to the public.

“The ERC formula was predictable and guided by global benchmarks and local economic conditions,” MAK explained.

However, since EPRA took over, transparency has vanished. Stakeholders, including the media, are no longer involved in the process.

G-to-G Oil Deal Under Fire

MAK also criticized the government-to-government (G-to-G) oil procurement framework. They claimed it replaced the more accountable open tender system.

“The G-to-G framework is opaque and lacks public scrutiny,” the association warned.

They insisted that fuel procurement follows a three-month cycle. Therefore, monthly price changes are unjustified and misleading.

A Call for Market Freedom

In conclusion, MAK urged the government to embrace a free market regime. They believe fuel prices should reflect global trends and competitive forces—not bureaucratic manipulation.

“Let Kenyans pay fair prices based on actual market conditions,” MAK demanded.

As fuel costs continue to burden households, the pressure on EPRA intensifies. Will the government listen, or will motorists continue to bear the brunt?
