Fuel Relief for Motorists as EPRA Slightly Lowers Pump Prices Across Kenya

Motorists in Nairobi and other major towns will enjoy a slight drop in fuel prices this month. The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced the new rates on Sunday, September 14, offering a small but welcome relief.

Starting midnight, Monday, September 15, Super Petrol will retail at Ksh184.52 per litre in Nairobi. Diesel will cost Ksh171.47, while Kerosene will go for Ksh154.78.

“In accordance with Section 101(y) of the Petroleum Act 2019 and Legal Notice No.192 of 2022, we have calculated the maximum retail prices of petroleum products which will be in force from 15th September 2025 to 14th October 2025,” EPRA stated.

This marks the second consecutive month of price reductions. In the previous review, Super Petrol dropped by Ksh1. Now, it has decreased by Ksh0.79. Diesel fell by Ksh0.11, and Kerosene dropped by Ksh0.80.

Slight Drop Despite Global Price Surge

Interestingly, the price cut comes amid rising global oil prices. According to the Central Bank of Kenya’s bulletin released on September 12, Murban crude rose by 2.5 percent per barrel.

“International oil prices rose, reflecting potential supply disruptions from the conflict in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine,” the bulletin read.

Despite this, EPRA attributed the local drop to reduced landing costs. Super Petrol’s average landed cost fell by 0.46 percent in August. Diesel dropped by 3.38 percent, while Kerosene declined by 2.93 percent.

Regional Price Differences

In Mombasa, Super Petrol will retail at Ksh181.24, while Diesel will cost Ksh168.19. Thika motorists will pay Ksh184.16 for petrol and Ksh171.47 for diesel.

All prices include a 16 percent Value-Added Tax, as outlined in the Finance Act 2023 and the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act of 2024.

What This Means for Kenyans

Although the drop is marginal, many Kenyans see it as a step in the right direction. With inflation still biting, any reduction helps ease household budgets.

However, experts warn that global tensions could reverse the trend. EPRA adjusts prices monthly based on exchange rates, shipping costs, and international crude trends.

For now, motorists can breathe a little easier. But as global oil markets remain volatile, future reviews may swing either way.
