Fuel Price Shake-Up: Super Petrol Up, Diesel and Kerosene Down in Latest EPRA Review

Motorists across the country are waking up to a mixed bag of news following the latest fuel price review announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

In its Saturday, June 14 update, EPRA confirmed an increase in super petrol prices by Ksh2.69 per litre. However, in a welcome relief for many, diesel and kerosene prices have dropped by Ksh1.95 and Ksh2.06 per litre, respectively.

Nairobi’s New Fuel Prices

According to EPRA’s release, the new prices effective from Saturday, June 15 to Monday, July 14 are as follows:

• Super Petrol – Ksh177.32
• Diesel – Ksh162.91
• Kerosene – Ksh146.93

The new fuel prices apply to Nairobi and will vary slightly across other regions due to transport and loading charges.

EPRA’s Explanation and Legal Basis

“In accordance with Section 101(y) of the Petroleum Act 2019 and Legal Notice No.192 of 2022, we have calculated the maximum retail prices,” EPRA stated.

The authority clarified that these prices include 16% VAT, as stipulated under the Finance Act 2023 and Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2024.

“The new prices reflect the revised rates for excise duty adjusted for inflation as per Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020,” EPRA added.

Kenyans React: A Sigh and a Grunt

Kenyans took to social media to express their mixed feelings. While matatu operators and industries welcomed the diesel drop, private motorists lamented the rise in petrol costs.

“This back and forth is exhausting. Diesel down, petrol up – we’re always juggling,” said Peter Kinyua, a taxi driver in Nairobi.

Many netizens accused the government of inconsistent energy policies, warning that these fluctuations could indirectly spike the cost of food, transport, and general commodities.

Bigger Questions Loom

Fuel prices remain a sensitive topic in Kenya, especially amid tough economic times. While EPRA insists the changes are driven by global market trends and tax adjustments, Kenyans continue to demand greater transparency in pricing mechanisms.

With the cost of living already biting, all eyes are now on the next price review in July. Will fuel costs stabilize, or will Kenyans brace for another shake-up?
