EPRA Lowers Fuel Prices: Relief for Kenyans as Diesel and Kerosene Drop,What you need to know!

Kenyans Breathe a Sigh of Relief
After months of economic strain, Kenyans have finally received a welcome break. On Monday, April 14, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced new fuel prices that bring relief to consumers. Starting midnight, fuel prices are set to drop—offering much-needed hope amid rising living costs.

Price Breakdown Across Cities
In Nairobi, prices for super petrol, diesel, and kerosene will be Ksh174.63, Ksh164.86, and Ksh148.99, respectively. This reflects a decrease of Ksh1.95 for petrol, Ksh2.20 for diesel, and Ksh2.40 for kerosene.

Meanwhile, in Mombasa, petrol will go for Ksh171.39, diesel at Ksh161.62, and kerosene at Ksh145.75. In Kisumu, residents will pay Ksh174.67, Ksh165.24, and Ksh149.42, respectively. These new rates will remain effective from April 15 to May 14.

Why the Prices Dropped
According to EPRA, “The prices are inclusive of the 16% Value Added Tax (VAT) as per the Finance Act 2023 and the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2024.”

Even more encouraging, global oil import costs have dropped significantly. The average landed cost of super petrol fell by 4.89%, from Ksh82,396.79 (USD 637.22) in February to Ksh78,388.61 (USD 606.06) in March.

Diesel dropped by 6.45%, from Ksh87,974.91 (USD 680.63) to Ksh82,388.87 (USD 636.75). Kerosene declined by 6.53%, from Ksh86,876.15 (USD 672.14) to Ksh81,228.97 (USD 628.22).

Global Influence at Play
The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) confirmed that international oil prices declined. On April 10, Murban oil traded at Ksh8,390 (USD 64.77) per barrel—down from Ksh9,300 (USD 71.86) on April 3.

This drop followed growing concerns over U.S. tariffs and increased oil output by major exporters. As a result, global demand weakened, leading to cheaper imports for Kenya.

Motorists and Families Celebrate
Many Kenyan motorists feared a fuel price hike this April. But now, those fears are gone. The drop will lower transport costs, ease inflation pressure, and help families stretch their household budgets.

The reduction in diesel and kerosene prices will also benefit farmers, small businesses, and households that rely on paraffin for cooking and lighting.

What’s Next?
Although prices remained unchanged earlier in the month despite falling global rates, this announcement shows that relief can reach Kenyans—albeit slowly. EPRA has now aligned the April review with actual market changes, giving hope that future reviews will follow suit.
