EPRA Slashes Petrol and Kerosene Prices by Ksh1, Diesel Stays the Same
Motorists and households are set to experience slight relief at the fuel pump starting Friday, August 15.
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced a Ksh1 price cut for super petrol and kerosene. However, diesel prices remain unchanged.
“During the review period, the maximum allowable pump prices for super petrol and kerosene have each decreased by Ksh1 per litre, while the price of diesel remains unchanged,” EPRA stated on Thursday, August 14.
New Prices Across Nairobi
From midnight, Nairobi motorists will pay Ksh185.31 per litre for super petrol, Ksh171.58 for diesel, and Ksh155.58 for kerosene.
Last month, super petrol retailed at Ksh186.31, diesel at Ksh171.58, and kerosene at Ksh156.58.
Why the Drop Happened
EPRA explained that the new rates follow changes in global petroleum costs.
However, not all fuels saw a cost drop. Diesel’s average landed cost rose by 3.08%, while kerosene’s climbed by 3.20%.
Global Market Shifts
The Central Bank of Kenya’s weekly bulletin had already signaled the drop.
Analysts attribute this to a projected increase in global supply, easing pressure on prices worldwide.
Taxes Still Bite
Despite the reduction, the new prices include a 16% VAT as per the Finance Act 2023 and Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2024. They also factor in excise duty adjustments for inflation under Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020.
“We have calculated the maximum retail prices of petroleum products which will be in force from 15 August 2025 to 14 September 2025,” EPRA noted in its statement.
Impact on Households and Businesses
For many Kenyans, any price drop offers some breathing space. A reduction in kerosene prices could particularly help low-income households that rely on it for cooking and lighting.
Yet, with diesel prices unchanged, transport and manufacturing costs remain high—likely keeping overall living costs elevated.
