Natembeya Fires Back at Gachagua Over 2027 Presidential Flagbearer Claims

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has strongly dismissed claims that the United Opposition has already picked its 2027 presidential candidate. His remarks came just hours after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua boldly declared himself the opposition’s flagbearer.

Speaking on Radio Citizen on Monday, September 15, Natembeya made his position clear.

“We must agree as the opposition, and no one should beat his chest claiming that he is the flag bearer,” he said. “I’m saying this because they are just cold facts.”

Gachagua’s Bold Declaration Sparks Reaction

On Sunday, September 14, Gachagua spoke during a church service and made a passionate case for his candidacy.

“I am a candidate to be president of the Republic of Kenya,” Gachagua stated. “I am qualified, and I have support. I am looking for more support, and I will be on the ballot.”

He dismissed concerns about his impeachment, insisting it does not disqualify him from running.

“If Kenyans elect me as President, if God wishes, I want to do only one thing; that is, to restore the Kenyan state and make sure we restore our health system so that when you go to the hospital, there is medicine,” he added.

Natembeya Sets Conditions for Flagbearer Selection

Natembeya emphasized that the opposition must follow a structured process to choose its leader. He stressed that popularity and resources will play a key role.

“For us to choose a flag bearer, we will start by checking the number of people you will have brought to us and the resources you have,” he said.

Until then, he urged unity and focus within the opposition.

“No one should declare himself the flag bearer. We must remain united and focused on removing the president from his seat,” Natembeya stated. “Not because we don’t love him, but because he is yet to fulfil the promises he made to Kenyans.”

Opposition Strategy Still Unfolding

Natembeya’s remarks reveal growing tension within the opposition ranks. While Gachagua pushes forward with his campaign, others call for patience and collective decision-making.

The opposition’s main goal, according to Natembeya, is to challenge President William Ruto’s leadership and offer Kenyans a better alternative.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the battle for the opposition’s top seat is heating up. But without consensus, unity may be harder to maintain.
