The dust has barely settled after both Kenya and Tanzania crashed out of the 2024 CHAN tournament, and already, emotions are running high. What started as online banter between the two East African rivals has now sparked serious calls for a friendly football showdown.

Online Banter Sparks Rivalry

Tensions began after allegations emerged that Kenyans had bought tickets for Tanzania’s quarter-final clash at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. This, Tanzanians claimed, locked many of their fans out.

The issue quickly went viral, with Tanzanians mocking Kenya’s poor performance. Kenyans, famous for their ruthless online comebacks, clapped back with their own banter.

But fate was ironic. Kenya bowed out after a tough loss to Madagascar. Soon after, Tanzania—who had mocked their neighbors—were also bundled out by Morocco, a team Kenya had defeated earlier in the group stages.

Calls for a Friendly

To ease the escalating tension, Kenyans online rallied behind the idea of a friendly football match between Harambee Stars and Taifa Stars.

Prominent figures quickly joined the debate. Renowned international journalist Larry Madowo was among the first to back the proposal.

“We need a friendly match between Harambee and Taifa Stars to determine who the champion is, and for respect to prevail. If these neighbours had won against Morocco, we would have moved out of the East African Community because of the abuse. Now we want a friendly,” Larry said.

His remarks struck a chord with many Kenyans, who felt the friendly would be a symbolic way to restore pride and neighborly respect.

Itumbi’s Suggestion

Digital strategist Dennis Itumbi echoed the sentiment, tying the idea to Kenya’s biggest national holiday.

“As part of Jamhuri Celebrations, I propose a friendly match between Harambee Stars and Taifa Stars. Played Home and Away. Our banter would translate to a good game,” Itumbi suggested.

His proposal not only aimed to cool the online tempers but also to turn the fierce rivalry into a unifying sporting event.

A Chance for Healing

Sports analysts now say the friendly could provide more than bragging rights. It would heal bruised national pride, strengthen regional ties, and give East Africans something to cheer for after a disappointing CHAN outing.

Whether played in Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, or both, fans on both sides agree: a friendly is the only fair way to settle the score.
