Maasai Mara International Airport to be Done by December 2026, Ruto Announces
The Head of State made the announcement on Thursday, March 19, while presiding over the launch of the Naivasha–Kisumu Standard Gauge Railway, reiterating his administration’s commitment to expanding critical infrastructure that supports travel, trade, and job creation.
Speaking in Narok County, home to the world-famous Maasai Mara National Reserve, Ruto said the new airport would transform access to one of Kenya’s most important tourist destinations.

“I came here to inspect the Maasai Mara International Airport. Before the end of this year, that airport will be completed, and tourists will no longer waste their time travelling to the Maasai Mara,” the President said.
Boost to Tourism Sector
The Maasai Mara National Reserve is globally renowned for its wildlife diversity and the annual wildebeest migration, often described as one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles. Each year, hundreds of thousands of international visitors travel to the reserve, contributing significantly to Kenya’s foreign exchange earnings.
However, access to the park has long been constrained by lengthy road journeys from major cities or reliance on smaller regional airstrips that accommodate limited flights.
Government officials believe the improved accessibility will enhance Kenya’s competitiveness in the global tourism market and increase visitor numbers.
Jobs and Local Development
Beyond tourism, the President emphasised that the project would deliver tangible economic benefits to surrounding communities, particularly young people in Narok County.

Local leaders have welcomed the development, noting that improved connectivity could unlock investment in a region that relies heavily on tourism revenues.
Wider Aviation Expansion
The announcement comes amid a broader push by the government to upgrade aviation infrastructure across the country to support regional integration and economic development.
Several new airports and modernised airstrips are currently under construction or nearing completion in different counties.
Just last month, the President launched the construction of a new international airport in Mandera valued at approximately KSh 900 million. According to government plans, construction works are scheduled to begin in April and will include a modern passenger terminal.
Strategic Importance
Analysts say the expansion of airport infrastructure reflects a broader strategy to diversify economic activity beyond traditional urban centres and unlock the potential of tourism-rich regions.
Improved air connectivity is expected not only to support international travel but also to enhance domestic tourism by making remote attractions more accessible to Kenyan travellers.
If completed on schedule, the Maasai Mara International Airport could mark a major milestone in Kenya’s efforts to modernise its transport network and strengthen its position as a leading tourism destination in Africa.

For visitors and local residents alike, the project promises shorter journeys, new business opportunities, and a stronger economic lifeline for one of the country’s most iconic landscapes.
