KNH Clarifies Handling of Bullet Recovered From Gikomba Shooting Victim

NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has clarified how it handled a bullet recovered from a patient who was injured during a shooting incident in Gikomba, Nairobi, after concerns emerged over the whereabouts of the projectile.

In a statement issued on Saturday, August 9, KNH denied claims that the bullet had gone missing from the hospital.

The hospital said the projectile was retained and preserved after doctors recovered it during the treatment of the injured patient.

KNH explained that the bullet was treated as both a medical and evidentiary item because of its potential importance to investigations into the shooting.

“The bullet was recovered during the treatment of the patient at the hospital. The hospital wishes to clarify that the bullet/projectile recovered during medical management was retained and preserved as part of the relevant medical and evidentiary records.”

The clarification comes amid a wider investigation into a shooting at Gikomba Market that left one person dead and another injured.

Bullet Lodged in Teenager’s Leg

The projectile was reportedly recovered from the leg of 16-year-old Abdala Lihan, who was injured during the incident.

According to the information provided, the bullet passed through the body of Moreen Nduku before lodging in Lihan’s leg.

Nduku, a mother of one from Pipeline Estate, was fatally injured during the shooting and later died at KNH after receiving treatment for several days.

Her death has prompted calls from her family for investigations and accountability over the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The police officer allegedly involved in the incident was reportedly attached to Shauri Moyo Police Station.

KNH Explains Bullet Handling

Following the removal of the projectile from Lihan’s leg, questions emerged over whether the bullet had been properly preserved.

KNH said such items are not treated as ordinary medical waste. Instead, recovered bullets and other objects that may have evidentiary value are preserved for possible use in investigations and legal proceedings.

The hospital said the projectile was subsequently handed over through the appropriate channels for further handling and forensic examination.

“In accordance with established procedures, such recovered items are handed over for further handling and forensic examination through the appropriate channels.”

The hospital’s explanation is intended to clarify the chain of custody surrounding the bullet and address concerns raised by the patient’s family.

Police Shooting Under Investigation

The incident has drawn attention because the same bullet was reportedly linked to injuries suffered by both Nduku and Lihan.

Nduku’s family is seeking answers over her death, while Lihan’s family has also raised concerns about the handling of the projectile recovered from his body.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain subject to investigation, and the hospital’s role was limited to the medical treatment of the injured patient and the preservation of the recovered projectile.

KNH maintained that its handling of the bullet followed established medical and evidentiary procedures.

The clarification could help investigators establish the chain of events surrounding the shooting as authorities continue examining the incident.

The case also highlights the importance of proper preservation and transfer of physical evidence recovered during emergency medical treatment.

Such evidence can be critical in criminal investigations, particularly in shooting cases where forensic examination may help establish the firearm used, the circumstances of the incident and the sequence of events.

As investigations continue, the families involved are expected to await further findings from law enforcement and forensic authorities.
