Kithure Kindiki Takes Credit for Ruto-Uhuru Truce: “Nilikuta Mitego Nikategua”
Nairobi – Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has claimed responsibility for brokering peace between President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta. Speaking on Wednesday, January 29, at his Karen residence, Kindiki said he dismantled traps set to keep the two leaders apart.
Kindiki: “I Uncovered the Traps”
Kindiki, in his usual candid style, disclosed that powerful forces had worked to widen the rift between Ruto and Uhuru. He insisted that he played a key role in neutralizing these forces.
“These people are speaking arrogantly here. Someone is full of so much pride. We have seen many people like that,” he said.
He recalled how he and others opposed Uhuru in the lead-up to the 2022 elections. At the time, Uhuru had turned against Ruto and backed opposition leader Raila Odinga. According to Kindiki, those around Uhuru manipulated him into making poor political choices.
“We even disagreed with President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was the commander-in-chief, because some people had taken him hostage. They caused him to lose ‘something.’ But nowadays, we have become friends,” he added.
Why Uhuru Remains Important
Kindiki stressed the need to respect retired heads of state, particularly Uhuru. He pointed out that Kenya has only one living former president following the deaths of Daniel Moi and Mwai Kibaki.
“We cannot afford to have our retired president complaining out there. It is wrong for a country,” he said.
The deputy president emphasized that in times of national crisis, a retired leader plays a crucial mediation role. He insisted that Uhuru holds the moral authority to intervene when necessary.

“If the nation faced a crisis beyond itself, we would need someone with enough stature to even approach President Ruto and call the nation to order,” he noted.
From Bitter Rivals to Friends
Kindiki confirmed that Ruto and Uhuru had reconciled and now enjoy a cordial relationship. He suggested that Uhuru’s influence in Kenyan politics remains significant, despite his retirement.
“Mzee Moi has rested, Mzee Kibaki has rested, and the only person who can take that role is a retired president, and that is Uhuru Kenyatta. The rest of us report to President Ruto. But Uhuru, as a former head of state, can step in if needed,” Kindiki stated.
In a remarkable shift from their bitter rivalry, the DP concluded by affirming that Ruto and Uhuru are now “best friends moving forward.”
