Kericho Governor Erick Mutai Impeached Again in Heated County Assembly Showdown
Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has been impeached for the second time in a dramatic County Assembly session on Friday, August 15, 2025.
The motion, introduced by Sigowet MCA Kiprotich Rogony, accused the governor of gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office, and mismanagement of county resources.
Overwhelming Vote by MCAs
The motion received overwhelming backing.
Out of 47 MCAs, 33 voted in favor, while 14 opposed.
The electronic vote comfortably surpassed the two-thirds majority required to remove the governor from office.
Chaos Erupts in the Assembly
The announcement of the results threw the Assembly into chaos.
Shouting matches broke out immediately after the Speaker declared that Mutai had been impeached.
Security struggled to control the situation as rival camps clashed.

Governor Mutai’s Last Stand
Governor Mutai attended the tense session, flanked by his legal team led by Katwa Kigen.
His lawyers attempted to push for a roll-call vote, but the Speaker denied the request.
The rejection triggered heated arguments between Mutai’s allies and the opposing side.
Speaker Confirms Senate Process Next
After the vote, the Speaker confirmed that the matter will now proceed to the Senate.
“The Assembly has spoken. The motion has passed and will now be sent to the Senate for determination,” the Speaker declared.
What Lies Ahead for Mutai
The Senate will now decide Mutai’s fate.
If senators uphold the impeachment, the governor will be permanently removed from office.
History Repeats Itself
This is not the first time Mutai has faced the political axe.

In his previous impeachment, 31 MCAs voted against him. However, the Senate later saved him, allowing him to keep his seat.
The second impeachment raises questions about his leadership and the deep divisions in Kericho politics.
Tense Future for Kericho County
The impeachment has left residents and leaders sharply divided.
Supporters of the motion say it will restore accountability.
Mutai’s loyalists insist the move is politically motivated and unjust.
