Principal Secretary at Ministry of Foreign Affairs Korir Sing’Oei during an address on Thursday, May 11, 2023.

“A fourth Kenyan, irregularly conscripted to serve in the Russian military, is on his way back home,” Sing’oei announced. “I commend our Mission in Moscow for the effort to rescue and repatriate Kenyans caught in this unfortunate and dangerous situation,” he added.

This marks the fourth successful rescue linked to a disturbing pattern of Kenyans being trafficked under false employment promises.

“Verify Before You Sign”—PS Urges Kenyans to Be Cautious

Sing’oei urged Kenyans to exercise extreme caution when dealing with foreign job offers.

“We implore Kenyans to exercise all diligence in verifying the authenticity of any foreign employment contracts,” he warned. “Seek advice from the Ministry or our Diaspora State department if in doubt,” he emphasized.

The warning comes amid growing evidence of a trafficking network luring Kenyans into war zones.

On September 25, detectives arrested a Russian man suspected of recruiting Kenyans to fight in Ukraine. His arrest followed the rescue of 22 Kenyans from an apartment in Athi River.

“They were promised job opportunities in Russia,” police revealed. “But they were being sent to the frontline,” they added.

“I Was Tricked”—Evans Kibet Shares Harrowing Experience

Evans Kibet, one of the earlier victims, shared his story in a video interview with the Kyiv Independent. He said he traveled to Russia as a tourist but was later tricked into signing military papers.

“I did not know I was being signed up for the Russian army,” Evans said. “I have never wanted a military job,” he added.

He recalled how a man offered to host him and later asked if he wanted to stay in Russia.

“He said he could do something for me,” Evans explained.
