Kenya in Mourning: President Ruto Orders Manhunt for Killers of Catholic Priest Father Allois Bett
Armed attackers shot him dead on the evening of Thursday, May 22, at Kabartile village, Elgeyo Marakwet County. The brutal killing happened in the troubled Kerio Valley, a region long plagued by banditry and cattle rustling.
President Ruto Reacts Swiftly
President William Ruto condemned the killing with deep emotion. In a statement released Friday, May 23, he said:
“Our condolences to the church, the faithful of St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish, Diocese of Eldoret, for the loss of Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett.”
The President praised the priest’s legacy, calling him:
“A tireless promoter of peace and a true faith leader whose sermons were genuine, clear, and targeted.”

“We will hunt down his killers as we commit to restoring peace in the Kerio Valley. Rest In Peace, Father,” he added.
Police Launch Manhunt, Six Suspects Nabbed
Just hours after the murder, General Service Unit (GSU) officers responded to the crime scene.
According to National Police Service (NPS) Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, Father Bett was ambushed at Mokoro Location, Kakiptul Sub-location, and shot dead on the spot.

“The NPS condemns this heinous act and is committed to conducting thorough and expeditious investigations,” Nyaga stated.
A Priest Remembered, A Nation United
Calls for justice have grown louder, with residents and clergy urging the government to not only punish the killers but also tackle the root causes of violence in the region.

The government’s next steps are crucial. As Kenya mourns, eyes remain fixed on Elgeyo Marakwet — waiting for justice, and hoping for peace.
