Karungo Wa Thang’wa Advocates for DCI Vehicle Branding: “It Enhances Credibility”

Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa has called for branding all Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) vehicles. He believes this step will boost public trust and address fears linked to unmarked cars allegedly used for abductions.

After a long interaction with DCI officers, Thang’wa shared his concerns. “After engaging with DCI officers for 10 hours yesterday, I asked why they use unmarked Subarus that scare Kenyans. They clarified that not all Subarus belong to DCI and insisted they arrest, not abduct,” he said.

Proposed Legislative Changes

To ensure accountability, Thang’wa plans to push for legal amendments. He aims to amend the National Police Service Act, Traffic Act, and Public Order Act.

“I will propose amendments to require all DCI vehicles to display logos, contact details, and identification numbers. This will ensure consistency and transparency,” he explained.

He emphasized that branding would improve public trust, encourage cooperation, and reduce criminal impersonation of law enforcement officers. Additionally, he urged Kenyans to stay alert when approached by unmarked vehicles.

Earlier, the DCI summoned Thang’wa over violence at a funeral in Limuru attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The senator was accused of malicious damage and causing injuries linked to the chaos.

Summoned by DCI

Thang’wa dismissed the summons as intimidation. “Why must I report to Nyeri for something that happened in Limuru? This feels unnecessary,” he said.

Call for Accountability

Thang’wa stressed the importance of visible policing. Transparent operations, he argued, would rebuild public trust and show professionalism in law enforcement.

“Branding DCI cars will prove that our security systems value credibility and fairness,” he concluded.
