Kalonzo Slams Ruto Over Alleged Termination of Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway Deal
Tension flared in Mututuni, Machakos County, on Saturday afternoon as Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka accused President William Ruto of allegedly terminating the Nairobi-Mombasa expressway project. The multi-billion-dollar highway, which was set to transform transport across the region, now hangs in uncertainty.
“Ruto Punished Us for Opposing Him,” Kalonzo Claims
While addressing congregants at a church service, Kalonzo didn’t hold back. He alleged that the Head of State halted the project as retaliation against the Ukambani region for opposing his regime.

“This road that passes through this region was expected to be constructed together with the one heading to Malaba,” Kalonzo said. “But this Nairobi-Mombasa Road project has been stopped by Ruto, and he is saying it is because of us,” he added.
Kalonzo emphasized that the expressway would have eased traffic and reduced deadly accidents along the busy corridor.
“An American conglomerate was ready to fund the project through a Public Private Partnership. It would have saved lives,” he lamented.
KeNHA Rejected Proposal Over Technical Gaps
Kalonzo’s remarks come just weeks after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) rejected a PPP proposal from Everstrong Capital, a US-based infrastructure firm. The Authority cited failure to meet specific criteria under the PPP Act of 2021.

“The PPP Committee delivered its decision during its 54th Ordinary meeting held on July 2, 2025,” KeNHA announced.
Opposition Vows to Revive Project in 2027
Despite the setback, Kalonzo assured residents that the expressway would be revived if the united opposition wins the 2027 general election.
“We will implement this project once we take over. Our people deserve better roads,” he promised.
His words ignited hope among locals, many of whom have long suffered from congestion and frequent accidents on the Nairobi-Mombasa route.
Public Reaction Mixed but Emotional

“We don’t care who builds the road. We just want it done,” said a frustrated truck driver.
As the debate intensifies, the fate of one of Kenya’s most vital transport corridors remains uncertain.
