Kalonzo Accuses Ruto of Sabotaging Raila’s AUC Bid for Personal Gain
Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has blamed President William Ruto for Raila Odinga’s failed bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship. Speaking on Friday, February 21, Kalonzo claimed that Ruto, who was Raila’s chief campaigner, had ulterior motives.
“I place the blame squarely on mheshimiwa William Samoei Ruto, who was a chief campaigner. He probably had his motives,” Kalonzo alleged.
According to him, Ruto may have seen Raila’s potential victory as a way to ease political pressure at home.
“He thought that maybe if he pushed Raila, atakuwa na easier time. He didn’t know it was going to be very difficult,” Kalonzo remarked.
Gen Z Protests May Have Hurt Raila’s Chances
Kalonzo suggested that the Kenya Kwanza government’s handling of the Gen Z protests influenced African leaders’ voting decisions. He argued that many heads of state viewed Raila as a representative of the same administration that had cracked down on protesting youths.

“Raila was a candidate of the Republic of Kenya. Sasa watu wanaangalia ile bendera ya Kenya ambayo inabebwa pale, is the same flag that our children were carrying along with a bottle of water to demonstrate and got killed,” he explained.
Did Gen Z Influence Raila’s Defeat?
Kalonzo further claimed that Kenya’s Gen Z generation had a powerful influence on the election outcome. He stated that young Kenyans successfully lobbied international leaders against Raila’s bid.
“Our Gen Zs have global power. They convinced heads of state to support Djibouti’s candidate instead of Raila,” he said.
Despite the loss, Raila has yet to issue an official statement. However, political analysts believe Kenya’s image during the protests may have played a role in the rejection of his bid.
What’s Next for Raila?
With the AUC race behind him, Raila’s next political move remains unclear. Many expect him to return to local politics, where he has been a key opposition figure. However, some sources suggest he may take time to regroup before making a public decision.
Meanwhile, Kalonzo continues to hold Ruto accountable for what he calls a “missed opportunity” for Kenya.
