President William Ruto has responded to Kenyans who turned his recent speech in Isiolo into a viral TikTok challenge. The speech, meant to highlight an ambitious 750-kilometre road project, became a trending meme as Kenyans humorously remixed it online.

During his address in Isiolo, Ruto confidently stood atop his vehicle, listing towns set to benefit from the project in a rhythmic and passionate tone.

His speech instantly reminded many of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s past remarks on Ruto’s ability to memorise rural road names. Kenyans quickly jumped on the trend, humorously suggesting that the announcement was just another political gimmick.

Ruto Fires Back

Speaking on Wednesday, February 19, Ruto dismissed the jokes and memes, affirming his commitment to developing Northern Kenya.

“I was in Northern Kenya, and I did announce a major road artery that will be constructed from Isiolo through Wajir, Mandera, and many people think it is a joke. In this country, sometimes we take matters of life and death as if they are jokes.”

He expressed disappointment that Kenyans often mock serious development projects.

Ruto further emphasized that the 750-kilometre road is not just a political promise but a necessity for economic growth.

“I’m committed to delivering that 750 kilometres of road because, for a very long time, we have left Northern Kenya behind. And I want to ask the people of Kenya, as we develop that transport corridor, there will be huge opportunities; take time and sample those opportunities.”
