Huduma Kenya Clarifies Process of Correcting Father’s Name on Children’s Birth Certificates
The clarification offers guidance to parents who discover errors in children’s birth records and want to have the information corrected through the official civil registration system.
“It is possible to apply for an amendment of the children’s names where they were registered using their grandfather’s name instead of their father’s name.”
The agency said parents seeking the correction should first present the child’s birth certificate to the relevant civil registration office or a Huduma Centre.

The review is important because different circumstances may require different procedures.
Parents Must Present Birth Certificate
Huduma Kenya advised parents to begin the process by providing a copy of the affected child’s birth certificate.
The document allows officials to establish how the child’s identity and parental information were recorded and determine whether an amendment can be processed.
“The amendment process will depend on how the names and parental details are currently reflected on the birth certificates. We would need to review the birth certificates to establish the appropriate procedure and the supporting documents required.”
The agency further urged parents not to assume that every case follows the same amendment procedure.
“Provide a copy of the child’s birth certificate, and we will advise you on the correct amendment process, the required documentation, and the applicable requirements.”

Evidence Required for Amendment
There must be sufficient evidence showing that the information recorded on the birth certificate contains an error or was incorrectly entered during registration.
The civil registry will assess the available information before deciding how the correction should be handled.
The process is designed to protect the integrity of birth records and prevent unauthorised changes to personal and parental information.

Incorrect information can therefore create challenges when individuals later apply for other government documents or services.
Instead, they should present the original birth certificate or a copy to the appropriate civil registration office or Huduma Centre and seek guidance.
