Gold and Glory: Kenyan Athletes Pocket Over Ksh103 Million After Tokyo Medal Sweep

Kenya’s stars have once again lit up the global stage. After a breathtaking performance at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Kenyan athletes have walked away with more than just medals—they’ve earned a staggering Ksh103 million in prize money and government rewards.

Seven Golds, Eleven Medals, Endless Pride

The medal chase began with Beatrice Chebet’s stunning win in the 10,000m. Soon after, Peres Jepchirchir conquered the women’s marathon. Faith Cherotich dominated the 3000m steeplechase, while Faith Kipyegon soared to gold in the 1500m final.

“We ran for Kenya. We ran for history,” said Kipyegon after her victory.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Chebet added more gold in the 800m and 5000m finals. Lillian Odira’s late surge on Sunday sealed Kenya’s seventh gold.

Silver medals came from Kipyegon in the 5000m and Dorcus Ewoi in the 1500m. Bronze medals were claimed by Reynold Cheruiyot in the men’s 1500m and Edmund Serem in the 3000m steeplechase.

World Athletics Payouts: Millions Earned

According to World Athletics, gold medalists earned USD70,000 (Ksh9 million), silver medalists received USD35,000 (Ksh4.5 million), and bronze medalists took home USD22,000 (Ksh2.8 million).

Kenya’s medal haul translated to:

  • Gold: USD490,000 (Ksh63.3 million)
  • Silver: USD70,000 (Ksh9 million)
  • Bronze: USD44,000 (Ksh5.6 million)

“This is a reward for years of sacrifice,” said Emmanuel Wanyonyi.

Government Steps Up With Bigger Bonuses

In August, Sports CS Salim Mvurya announced new reforms to boost athlete rewards. Gold medalists now receive Ksh3 million, silver medalists get Ksh2 million, and bronze medalists earn Ksh1 million.

This means the government will pay out an additional Ksh27 million to the medalists.

“We are proud of our athletes. They deserve every shilling,” Mvurya stated.

Total Earnings Hit Ksh103 Million

Combining international and government payouts, Kenyan athletes will pocket a total of Ksh103 million. Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet emerged as top earners.

“This motivates us to keep pushing. Kenya is rising,” said Chebet.

As the celebrations continue, Kenyans everywhere are beaming with pride. These champions have not only brought home medals—they’ve inspired a nation.
