Global Rights Groups Confront Samia Suluhu as Post-Election Violence Engulfs Tanzania

Tanzania is in turmoil. Following the October 29 general elections, violence has erupted across major cities. Now, Kenyan and international human rights groups are demanding urgent action from President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government.

“Stop the Brutality” — KHRC and FIDH Demand Immediate Action

On Friday, the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) released a joint statement. They condemned the escalating repression and called for swift reforms.

“Kenya cannot remain silent while our neighbour slides into authoritarianism,” said KHRC Executive Director Davis Malombe. “The EAC must not normalise election-related violence or tolerate leaders who weaponise state institutions to silence opposition.”

The groups urged Tanzanian authorities to restore internet access, release detained opposition figures, and investigate reported killings.

“AU and EAC Must Reject Sham Elections” — Regional Bodies Under Pressure

The statement also challenged the African Union (AU) and East African Community (EAC) to take a stand.

“The African Union and East African Community have a clear responsibility,” said Alice Mogwe, FIDH President. “They must publicly reject any election which fails to meet basic democratic and human rights standards.”

This call comes amid growing concern over the legitimacy of the election results.

“Restore Internet Now” — Information Blackout Sparks Global Alarm

Rights groups demanded the immediate restoration of internet and communication platforms. The blackout has crippled independent reporting and blocked the flow of vital information.

“Citizens must be allowed to speak. Journalists must be allowed to report,” Malombe emphasized.

Without access, many Tanzanians remain in the dark about ongoing events.

“Thirty Protesters Dead” — Crackdown Turns Deadly

Reports from rights monitors suggest that police and army units have killed at least thirty protesters. Demonstrations in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Dodoma have turned violent.

“Security forces used firearms and teargas to disperse demonstrators,” confirmed the UN Human Rights Office. “We urge restraint and an end to unnecessary use of lethal force.”

The whereabouts of President Suluhu remain unknown, fueling speculation and fear.

“Kenyan Journalist Detained” — Cross-Border Tensions Rise

Among those arrested is Kenyan journalist Shoka Juma, attached to Nyota TV. He was reportedly detained while crossing into Tanzania to monitor civilian movements.

“Journalists must not be treated as criminals. Press freedom is non-negotiable,” said a Nyota TV spokesperson.

His detention has triggered diplomatic concern and calls for his release.

“UN Demands Accountability” — Global Eyes on Tanzania

The United Nations Human Rights Office expressed alarm over the violence. They called for restraint and respect for human rights.

“We are deeply concerned by reports of deaths and injuries during election-related protests,” the agency stated.

As pressure mounts, the world watches Tanzania’s next move.
