US Embassy Issues Safety Alert as Tanzania Erupts in Election Day Protests

Tanzania plunged into chaos on Wednesday, October 29, as violent protests erupted across major towns during the country’s tense election. The unrest prompted the US Embassy to issue an urgent safety advisory to American citizens.

“Shelter in Place” — US Embassy Urges Caution

In a strongly worded statement, the US Embassy warned its nationals to stay indoors and avoid crowds.

“There are reports of demonstrations in multiple locations. US government personnel are advised to shelter in place,” the embassy stated.

Americans in Tanzania were urged to monitor local media, remain alert, and enroll in the Smart Traveller Enrolment Program (STEP) for real-time updates.

“Streets Are Burning” — Youth Protest Suluhu’s Rule

The advisory followed a wave of protests led by angry youth opposing President Samia Suluhu’s bid for a second term. Her strongest challenger, Tundu Lissu, remains in detention. His party boycotted the polls, citing unfair conditions.

“We are tired of being silenced. This election is a joke,” shouted one protester in Dar es Salaam.

Several roads were blocked. Police struggled to contain the swelling crowds. Teargas filled the air as clashes intensified.

“We Will Not Tolerate Chaos” — Government Issues Stern Warning

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Alfred Chalamila warned that authorities would respond firmly to any attempts to disrupt the election.

“We will not take lightly any efforts to destabilize the process,” Chalamila declared.

Despite the warning, some polling stations were vandalized. Protesters tore down ballot boxes, expressing frustration with the current regime.

“Digital Blackout Confirmed” — Internet Shut Down Nationwide

Adding to the tension, internet watchdog NetBlocks confirmed a nationwide disruption in connectivity.

“Live network data show a nationwide disruption to internet connectivity in Tanzania,” NetBlocks reported.

Three major service providers shut down access, sparking widespread concern and limiting communication.

“They want to hide the truth. That’s why they cut the internet,” said a youth activist.

The blackout crippled online updates, leaving citizens in the dark during a critical moment.

“Foreigners on Edge” — Safety Becomes Top Priority

Foreign nationals, especially Americans, were advised to keep a low profile. The embassy provided emergency contact details and emphasized caution.

“Avoid large gatherings. Stay indoors. Monitor developments closely,” the advisory read.

Tourists and expatriates scrambled to secure safe locations as tensions escalated.

“Democracy Under Siege” — Human Rights Groups Speak Out

Regional human rights organizations condemned the election, calling it a sham. They accused Suluhu’s administration of suppressing opposition and dismantling democratic institutions.

“This represents a total collapse of democratic principles,” said the Kenya Human Rights Commission.
