Maasai Mara Guide Alleges Tanzania Is Blocking Wildebeests: “Wanakuja Na Ndege”
A veteran Maasai Mara tour guide has stirred controversy with claims that Tanzanian authorities are actively blocking wildebeests from crossing into Kenya. Charles Lukokolo, who has guided tourists for over 30 years, says the iconic migration is no longer guaranteed.
“When they see the animals coming in large numbers, they at times use helicopters or drive jeeps in front of them to scare them back. It has made it very difficult,” Lukokolo alleged.
Tourists Left Disappointed
According to Lukokolo, tourists now wait for hours at the Mara River, hoping to witness the famous crossing. Yet, many leave without seeing a single wildebeest leap.
“When they reach the riverbank, they retreat. They sense the environment is not friendly. It becomes very challenging because the experience is no longer guaranteed,” he explained.
Predators Vanish From Riverbanks
Lukokolo also noted a sharp decline in predator sightings. Lions and cheetahs, once abundant during migration, no longer gather by the river.

“We used to see lions and cheetahs making multiple kills, sometimes three or four wildebeests, even after they had eaten their fill. It was part of the raw spectacle that drew global visitors,” he recalled.
Climate Change Adds Pressure
Beyond alleged interference, Lukokolo blamed climate change for disrupting the migration. He pointed to reduced water levels in the Mara River and a noticeable drop in crocodile populations.
“There was a time you could count at least 30 crocodiles lying in the river mud waiting for the animals. As soon as the wildebeests started crossing, the crocodiles would attack, and it was fascinating to watch. Today, you find very few, and many animals walk freely across the river,” he said.
This ecological imbalance threatens not just the migration, but the entire Mara ecosystem.
A Call for Urgent Action

“The migration is more than a spectacle. It’s our lifeline. We must protect it,” he urged.
As debate intensifies, conservationists and government officials face mounting pressure to investigate and act.
