Gen Z Protests: Calm in Kisumu as Demos Erupt in Nairobi, Kisii, and Mombasa
While tension boiled in cities like Nairobi, Kisii, and Mombasa, Kisumu surprised many with its calm on Wednesday morning.
A peaceful atmosphere blanketed the lakeside city even as thousands of Gen Z protesters filled streets across the country. They were marking one year since lives were lost in fierce anti-government protests.
Empty Streets and Closed Shops
“Today feels like a ghost town,” a local boda boda rider told reporters. “Many of my friends stayed home out of fear.”
Most businesses in the CBD remained shut. Some shopkeepers stood by their closed doors, nervously watching the silent streets.
“I didn’t open today because I feared there would be chaos like last year,” said Mercy Atieno, a shop owner. “But I thank God for the peace.”
Heavy Police Presence Sparks Caution
Although there were no major gatherings, security was tight. Police officers could be seen in strategic parts of the city.
“We are ready for any eventuality,” said one officer stationed near the Kisumu Bus Park. “But so far, everything is under control.”
The strong police presence may have discouraged protesters from taking to the streets.
Raila’s Role in Calming the Storm
Many locals believe the calm was not by chance. Instead, they credited Raila Odinga’s recent cooperation with the government.

“Raila joining Ruto’s dialogue talks changed everything,” explained Obiero Okoth, a political analyst. “He holds this region in his hands. If he says no protests, people listen.”
For decades, Kisumu has been a hotspot of political unrest, often lighting up during national protests.
This time, the silence spoke volumes.
Mixed Emotions Among Residents
Despite the calm, emotions ran high. Some residents quietly mourned those who died last year.
“We may not be on the streets, but our hearts are heavy,” said Lilian Achieng’. “Young lives were lost for justice. We remember them.”

“I’m glad there’s no violence,” said John Otieno, a matatu driver. “We need peace more than protests.”
