Gachagua Urges Kenyans Abroad to Reject CBK Remittance Survey
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged Kenyans living abroad to resist a new Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) survey.
Warning Against ‘Intrusive’ Government Plans
Speaking in California on Saturday, Gachagua claimed the Remittances Household Survey was an “ill-intended” and “intrusive” move.
“I do not know what is wrong with William Ruto,” he told the crowd.
He accused President Ruto of directing CBK to probe how much money Kenyans abroad send home.
Fear of New Taxes on Diaspora Remittances
Gachagua warned the exercise could pave the way for new taxes.
“You guys have already paid tax; you are helping your kin because of failed systems,” he said.
The DP urged diaspora families not to disclose remittance information to CBK officers.
“If Ruto wants to know how much money you send home, he should come here and talk to you,” he insisted.
Accusations of Targeting Hard-Working Kenyans
The DP accused the government of targeting diaspora income to fix local economic failures.
“They send money because things are not working in the government. That is too intrusive,” he said.
“We do not want too much government in people’s lives.”
CBK Defends the Survey
Last week, CBK announced the nationwide survey.
Field officers will visit homes receiving funds from abroad to record amounts, usage, and challenges.
CBK said the data would shape policies to boost remittance flows and improve transfer systems.
It will also help identify recipient needs.
The regulator added it will collect information from all international remittance service providers.
Record Remittances for Kenya
In 2024, Kenyans abroad sent home Ksh666.7 billion, about 4% of the GDP.
In 2023, the amount was Ksh586 billion.
The figures highlight the diaspora’s critical role in sustaining Kenya’s economy.
Gachagua’s Alternative Vision
Gachagua pledged that if his party takes power, it will not intimidate the diaspora.
Instead, he promised to launch a diaspora infrastructure bond.

“This is the kind of policy we need—one that rewards your hard work,” he told the audience.
“Not one that intimidates or taxes you further.”
Tension Over Diaspora Role in Economy
While CBK insists the survey is about policy, Gachagua warns it’s about control.
The clash underscores deep mistrust between sections of government and Kenyans abroad.
For now, diaspora families are caught between official reassurances and political warnings.
