Drama Unfolds as Governor Otichillo Faces Rejection During Ruto’s Vihiga Visit

Luanda, Vihiga County – President William Ruto’s development tour in Western Kenya took an unexpected twist on Wednesday, January 22. The planned groundbreaking ceremony for the Luanda Modern Market turned chaotic when Vihiga Governor Wilber Ottichilo faced outright rejection from an agitated crowd.

Governor Heckled Off Stage

Governor Ottichilo’s attempt to address the crowd ended in humiliation as jeers drowned out his speech. Despite his efforts to calm the audience, the discontented crowd intensified their heckling, leaving him no choice but to cut his address short.

“Luanda, hoye! Well, on behalf of the people of Luanda…I am saying this…on behalf of the people of Luanda; I give thanks for…hello…hello…well…I think…listen…listen…well, we will leave it at that. If you have refused, it’s okay,” Ottichilo said, surrendering the microphone back to President Ruto.

Political Tensions Boil Over

The chaos didn’t stop with Ottichilo. Luanda MP Oyugi Dick Maungu also faced resistance when he took the stage. Though heckled, Maungu persevered, urging locals to focus on development.

“Well…thank you very much. You youths, if you have been given money, keep quiet. I am aware that yesterday someone came here and distributed money to the youths to drink today. But we are here for the sake of development, isn’t that so?” Maungu questioned, trying to restore calm.

He later attributed the disruptions to disgruntled locals upset about recent demolitions and claimed the heckling was politically instigated.

Ruto Steadies the Ship

Despite the uproar, President Ruto remained unflappable. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to uplifting the region. The Luanda Modern Market, a key project in Vihiga County, symbolizes the government’s dedication to grassroots development.

The market, which costs Sh365 million, will provide over 1,000 traders with modern facilities, including cold storage to reduce post-harvest losses.

Absentee Leaders Add to Tensions

Notably absent from the event was ODM Deputy Leader and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi. In a statement on January 21, Osotsi cited prior commitments abroad and urged residents to welcome Ruto warmly. However, his absence fueled speculation about divisions among local leaders.

A Divided Front Amid Development Goals

The events in Luanda highlight underlying tensions in Vihiga County’s political landscape. While the government pushes for unity and development, local leaders must address grassroots grievances to foster collaboration.
