Peter Kawanjiru Re-Arrested by Anti-Terror Police Outside Ruiru Courts Shortly After Release
Chaos erupted at the Ruiru Courts in Kiambu County after anti-terror officers forcefully re-arrested Peter Kinyanjui alias Kawanjiru, a vocal youth leader in the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
The drama unfolded just minutes after Kawanjiru had secured his release bond. He had barely stepped out of the court when plainclothes officers surrounded him.
Eyewitnesses were left shocked as officers dragged him into a moving van. Moments later, gunshots rang in the air, sending people scattering in panic.

“They took him so fast, we couldn’t even react. We just heard shots and saw the van speed off,” one supporter said.
Heart-Wrenching Scene as Mother Pleads in Vain
Among those caught in the chaos was Beatrice Wanjiru, Kawanjiru’s mother. She screamed and cried as officers overpowered everyone trying to stop them.
“I just wanted to see my son go home in peace. They took him like a thief!” she shouted in tears.
Despite her pleas, the officers shoved Kawanjiru into the van and sped off. No explanation was given to the family or his legal team.
“We don’t understand. The court had granted him bond. Why are they doing this?” asked a distressed relative.
Previous Arrest Linked to Gen-Z Protests
Kawanjiru had initially been arrested over claims he participated in torching the Kiambu Law Courts during the nationwide Gen-Z protests on June 25, 2025.

“They said they were from DCI Kiambu Road looking for Kawanjiru,” a family member recounted.
“When we refused to open, they started hitting the door with metal rods.”
He was among several Gachagua allies detained following the violent protests.
More Re-Arrests Fuel Fear Among Youth Leaders
Kawanjiru’s re-arrest wasn’t the only one. Wanjiku Thiga, another DCP youth figure, was taken into custody again just hours after her release on a Ksh50,000 bail.
The arrests have stirred deep anger among party youths, who claim they are being forced out of the party through threats and intimidation.
“They want to silence us, but we won’t back down,” said one defiant youth leader.
Despite the pressure, DCP leaders have vowed to go ahead with the Saba Saba demonstrations.

“We’re not giving up. The movement is bigger than any of us,” another youth activist declared.
