Gachagua Breaks Silence: “I Stayed Away to Respect Gen Zs,” Denies Funding Chaos
In a gripping interview on Friday night, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua finally addressed his noticeable absence from the June 25 protests. His explanation? A powerful nod of respect to Kenya’s youth.
“Gen Zs asked us to stay away from the protests and rightly so, because they don’t want to be owned by anyone,”
Gachagua told NTV.
He said his participation might have triggered damaging political speculation.
“Had I joined them on Wednesday, it would’ve fuelled false claims that I fund them.”
The remarks come amid public confusion over reports linking Gachagua to destruction witnessed in Nairobi’s CBD. The former DP firmly denied any involvement in sponsoring goons who reportedly caused havoc during the protests.

“If I funded goons, why weren’t they arrested? If they were mine, they’d have been shot,”
he questioned.
“How did unarmed goons take over a police station? The Interior CS must respect Kenyans.”
Gachagua sharply criticised Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, accusing him of spreading falsehoods to mislead the public.

He also hit out at Murkomen for allegedly profiling members of the Kikuyu community. According to Gachagua, Murkomen claimed that most destructive protestors were from the Mt Kenya region—a statement Gachagua condemned as divisive and reckless.
Instead, he claimed that the violence was a deliberate tactic by pro-government politicians who allegedly planted goons among peaceful protestors to sabotage the Gen Z-led demonstrations.
In response to President William Ruto’s comments that he would only step down if offered a better plan for Kenya, Gachagua didn’t hold back.
“I don’t think anyone wants to overthrow William Ruto. All these allegations that the protests were aimed at overthrowing him are baseless,”
he declared.
“They are empty gimmicks from his boys trying to hype and cheat him from seeing the reality that Kenyans are agitating for reforms.”
He further challenged Ruto to either step aside or prepare to face the consequences at the 2027 general elections.

As public pressure mounts and the youth movement gains traction, Gachagua’s fiery statements add new layers to the growing national debate around leadership, accountability, and citizen power.
