KeNHA Announces 8-Hour Traffic Disruption on Nairobi Southern Bypass This Weekend
In a public notice issued on Monday, June 2, the authority revealed the disruption will begin on Saturday, June 7 at 10pm and end on Sunday, June 8 at 8am.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that a section of the Nairobi Southern Bypass near the entrance of the CRBC Camp, opposite the Nairobi National Park, will experience a temporary traffic disruption,”
the notice read.
Why the Disruption?
KeNHA explained the closure is necessary for the installation of stress-strain sensors on the highway pavement.

“The disruption follows the installation of stress-strain sensors on the highway pavement,”
the notice added.
These sensors help monitor the pavement’s response to different physical forces—especially from heavy vehicles. They provide real-time data that supports better road maintenance and upgrade decisions.
Sensors for Safer Roads
The sensors are part of a long-term strategy to assess the structural health of the Southern Bypass.
They track how traffic pressure, weather, and road age affect road layers. This helps KeNHA plan for future upgrades and avoid sudden road failures.
Notably, the Southern Bypass carries significant heavy commercial traffic, making it a high-priority area for maintenance.
Disruption Details
KeNHA assured road users that the disruption will be limited.
“Motorists are advised to approach the section with extra caution and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals who will be on site,”
KeNHA urged.
Safety First, Progress Ahead
This isn’t the first time KeNHA has partially closed the bypass. In December 2024, a similar disruption occurred during the rehabilitation of expansion joints and pavement reconstruction near the Virtual Weighbridge.

Although the temporary inconvenience may frustrate motorists, KeNHA insists it’s part of a larger goal—to keep roads safer and stronger.
Drivers are encouraged to plan accordingly, use alternate routes where possible, and stay alert near the CRBC Camp area.
