Nairobi: KeNHA Announces One-Month Closure of Uhuru Highway from March 3
Nairobi motorists are set for major traffic disruptions as the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) announces a month-long closure of Uhuru Highway. The closure, scheduled from March 3 to April 7, will facilitate the construction of a pedestrian underpass at the Haile Selassie roundabout.
In a statement, KeNHA urged motorists to prepare for the inconvenience and use designated alternative routes.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) would like to inform the public of a temporary traffic disruption at Haile Selassie Roundabout on Uhuru Highway (A8) Road. This traffic disruption is due to scheduled road works for the construction of a pedestrian underpass, which will commence from Monday, March 3, 2025, to Monday, April 7, 2025,” read the official statement.
Alternative Routes for Motorists
To ease congestion, KeNHA has provided alternative routes for motorists affected by the closure. The authority also urged road users to cooperate with traffic marshals and police officers on-site.
KeNHA emphasized that these measures aim to ensure smooth traffic flow while construction is ongoing. “We advise motorists to adhere to the proposed traffic management plan and follow instructions from law enforcement officers,” KeNHA stated.

KeNHA’s Role in Infrastructure Management
Established in 2008, KeNHA plays a crucial role in managing and maintaining national trunk roads. The agency routinely implements temporary road closures to facilitate construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of highways.
Beyond infrastructure development, KeNHA also responds to road crises such as accidents and traffic snarl-ups. Last December, the agency deployed officers to manage heavy congestion on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway as thousands of travelers rushed home for Christmas.
Past Efforts to Ease Traffic Congestion
During the December 2024 gridlock, KeNHA worked alongside traffic police to manage the standstill that left motorists stranded for hours. To resolve the crisis, the authority introduced three alternative routes for travelers heading to Nakuru:
- Naivasha – Njabini – Ol Kalou – Dundori – Lanet – Nakuru.
- Flyover – Njabini – Ol Kalou – Dundori – Lanet – Nakuru.
- Ngong – Suswa – Narok – Mau Narok – Nakuru.
These interventions helped ease congestion and ensured smoother travel during the holiday season.
Motorists Urged to Plan Ahead
With the upcoming Uhuru Highway closure, Nairobi residents are advised to adjust their travel plans accordingly. KeNHA remains committed to improving road safety and efficiency through ongoing infrastructure projects.
As the city prepares for this significant traffic disruption, the agency assures motorists that the new pedestrian underpass will enhance pedestrian safety and streamline movement along one of Nairobi’s busiest highways.
