EACC Arrests KPLC Official for Demanding KSh 300K Bribe

In a bold operation, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has apprehended a Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) employee for soliciting a hefty bribe. Joshua Wasakha Wangeni, the suspect, allegedly demanded KSh 300,000 from a Nairobi-based businessman to restore electricity to their godown.

Shocking Demand Exposed

The saga began when Wangeni disconnected the complainant’s electricity and demanded a “facilitation fee” for its reconnection. Despite negotiating the bribe down to KSh 200,000, the business owner refused to give in. Instead, they reported the incident to the EACC, setting the stage for a dramatic operation.

EACC Operation and Arrest

Acting swiftly, EACC officials laid a trap to catch Wangeni in the act. On Wednesday, they arrested the suspect while receiving the bribe. The sting operation was executed flawlessly, underscoring the Commission’s commitment to curbing corruption in public offices.

“The suspect was caught red-handed accepting the bribe,” an EACC official disclosed. “This sends a strong message to public servants who misuse their positions for personal gain.”

Detention and Release

After the arrest, Wangeni was taken to Kilimani Police Station, where he was held overnight. On Thursday, he was released on police bail as investigations continued. The EACC assured the public that they are working diligently to ensure justice is served.

Business Community Applauds Action

The business owner, whose identity remains undisclosed for security reasons, praised the EACC for their swift response. “It’s time we stand against corruption,” the complainant said. “Bribery hinders business growth and hurts honest citizens.”

This arrest highlights ongoing issues within Kenya Power, which has faced numerous corruption allegations. The incident underscores the need for structural reforms to restore public trust in service delivery institutions.

Call for Accountability

The EACC has urged Kenyans to report corruption without fear. “We need the public to collaborate with us in exposing rogue officials,” the Commission stated. Transparency, they noted, is crucial for rooting out bribery and ensuring justice.

As investigations continue, all eyes are on the judicial system to see if justice will be delivered. Wangeni’s case is a stark reminder of the corruption menace and the importance of vigilance in holding public officers accountable.
