Martha Karua to Form New Party After Meeting Rigathi Gachagua
Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua has announced plans to launch a new political party, the People’s Liberation Party (PLP). Speaking at her home in Kirinyaga on Saturday, January 25, Karua shared that the party will officially be unveiled in February.
A Rebranded Vision for 2027
Karua revealed that the idea for PLP began in May 2024, long before the Gen Z protests erupted.
“I have been the leader of Narc Kenya, but we have rebranded. We will be launching our new brand next month. The name is the People’s Liberation Party (PLP). We applied for it in May 2024, long before the Gen Z protests. The process is becoming complete,” she stated.
The veteran politician also confirmed that she will use PLP as her political vehicle to vie for the presidency in the 2027 elections.
An Invitation to Unity
Karua extended an olive branch to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, urging him to join forces with her. Despite their past political differences, she emphasized the need for unity to challenge President William Ruto’s administration.
“I have heard my brother (Gachagua) is also likely to be launching his [party], but I am inviting you all. PLP is a big house. If ready, come and walk with us. We welcome you to form another party, but let us walk together,” Karua said.
Her remarks signal a shift in tone between the two leaders, who have had a history of political clashes. During the 2022 elections, their rivalry often played out in public, with Gachagua criticizing Karua’s debate performance while backing William Ruto. At the time, Karua was running as Raila Odinga’s deputy under the Azimio coalition.

PLP: A Party of Change
“I have been the leader of Narc Kenya, but we have rebranded. We will be launching our new brand next month. The name is the People’s Liberation Party (PLP). We applied for it in May 2024, long before the Gen Z protests. The process is becoming complete,” she stated.who are focused on creating a formidable opposition to the ruling government.
“The party will be open to coalescing with others who are invested in challenging President William Ruto out of office,” she said.
Her announcement has stirred political conversations, especially with speculation about Gachagua’s rumored plans to form his own political outfit. If both leaders align, it could reshape the 2027 political landscape.
A Turning Point in Kenyan Politics
The unveiling of PLP marks a turning point in Karua’s political career. As she rebrands her leadership, the call for collaboration among opposition leaders hints at a broader strategy to consolidate forces against the Kenya Kwanza government.
Kenya now waits to see if Karua’s appeal to Gachagua and other leaders will spark a coalition strong enough to challenge the status quo.
