Ndindi Nyoro Lands UDA MCAs Zack Macharia, Winnie Wambui Days After UDA Exit

Kiharu MP and People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) leader Ndindi Nyoro has welcomed two United Democratic Alliance (UDA) MCAs into his newly adopted political outfit, days after announcing his own departure from President William Ruto’s ruling party.

Nyoro announced the move on Thursday, August 20, introducing Kiuu MCA Zack Macharia and Kiambu MCA Winnie Wambui as the latest politicians to join PPK.

The move could signal the beginning of a wider political realignment in the Mt Kenya region as parties and politicians position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Ndindi Nyoro Welcomes Two UDA MCAs

In a statement announcing the defections, Nyoro identified the two MCAs and confirmed that both had left UDA.

“Today we have received Members of the County Assembly from Kiambu County to the People’s Party; Hon Zack Macharia – Current MCA, Kiuu (Githurai 45), Ruiru Constituency and Winnie Wambui – Kiambu MCA.”

Nyoro added:

“Both have defected from the Wheelbarrow party UDA.”

Macharia represents Kiuu Ward, popularly associated with Githurai 45, in Ruiru Constituency. Wambui is also a serving MCA in Kiambu County.

Their move makes them among the first county-level politicians to publicly join Nyoro’s political vehicle since the Kiharu MP announced his new political direction.

The defections come at a significant time in Kenya’s political calendar, with the 2027 elections less than two years away.

Why Ndindi Nyoro Left UDA

Nyoro formally announced his departure from UDA on Monday, August 18, ending months of speculation about his political future.

The Kiharu lawmaker made the announcement during an event at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, where he also unveiled his new political role under PPK.

Nyoro cited concerns about the government’s performance and the challenges facing the country as some of the reasons behind his decision to leave the ruling party.

He pointed to what he described as the difficult transition from campaigning to governing, including the pressure of managing public expectations and the country’s rising debt.

“The trial and error of governance has been much harder than campaigning, especially when it comes to meeting the expectations of Kenyans.”

Nyoro has since positioned himself as part of a broader opposition effort ahead of the next General Election.

He has said he intends to work with different opposition leaders and political parties to develop what he describes as a common national and economic agenda.

Mt Kenya Political Realignment

The latest defections come amid growing political movements in the Mt Kenya region.

Several prominent leaders from the region have recently distanced themselves from UDA and aligned themselves with alternative political formations.

Among them are Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata and Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha, who have joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

The developments have intensified speculation about the political direction of the Mt Kenya region ahead of 2027.

Nyoro’s move adds another dimension to the emerging political landscape, particularly because of his influence in the region and his previous role within President Ruto’s political establishment.

Nyoro and Gachagua’s Emerging Alliance

Nyoro and Gachagua are now operating outside the ruling party, creating room for possible cooperation ahead of the 2027 polls.

Gachagua has repeatedly indicated that he is open to working with political leaders and parties seeking to challenge the Ruto administration.

However, neither Nyoro nor Gachagua has formally announced a joint political alliance.

For now, Nyoro’s recruitment of Macharia and Wambui gives PPK an early presence at the county assembly level as political parties begin laying the groundwork for the 2027 election campaigns.

The coming months are likely to reveal whether the latest defections develop into a broader movement away from UDA in Mt Kenya or remain isolated political shifts.
