Homa Bay Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga Resigns After Fights With Wanga

Homa Bay, Kenya – Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga has officially resigned from his position, ending months of speculation over his strained relationship with Governor Gladys Wanga. The move, announced on Thursday, February 26, is expected to reshape the county’s political dynamics ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

Magwanga, who was elected alongside Governor Wanga in the 2022 General Election, confirmed his resignation after what insiders described as a prolonged fallout with the county boss. Sources close to the administration indicated that the rift between the two leaders had deepened over the past year, stemming from divergent political opinions and administrative disagreements.

Escalating Tensions

What began as minor disputes over county operations reportedly escalated into political differences that made working relations untenable. Magwanga had previously lamented being sidelined in key decision-making processes and accused the governor of deliberately undermining his role.

In February, Magwanga moved to court challenging Wanga’s alleged decision to close his office, arguing that the move left him without a workspace and rendered him unable to serve the residents of Homa Bay.

“I went to court to petition the court to order the governor to unlock my office that she locked last year. She has rendered me jobless. I have nowhere to sit to offer my services to the people of Homa Bay,” Magwanga said.

He insisted that the closure of his office undermined service delivery and denied county residents the representation they were entitled to.

“I cannot discharge my duties from home or under a tree. My role requires an office within the county administration,” he added.

Political Fallout

The fallout between the two leaders can be traced back to November last year when Magwanga defied Governor Wanga and campaigned for Kasipul parliamentary candidate Philip Aroko. Wanga, meanwhile, was leading campaigns for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate Boyd Were.

Observers say this defiance marked the beginning of open political differences between the deputy governor and his boss, eventually culminating in his resignation.

Implications for ODM and County Politics

Magwanga’s resignation is expected to have significant implications for ODM politics in Homa Bay, a county considered a stronghold of the party. His departure raises questions about the unity of the county leadership and the party’s ability to maintain cohesion ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political analysts argue that the resignation could embolden rival factions within ODM and potentially alter alliances in the region. Governor Wanga, who also serves as ODM chairperson, now faces the challenge of consolidating her leadership while addressing the fallout from Magwanga’s exit.

Conclusion

Magwanga’s resignation underscores the growing tensions within county administrations where political differences often spill into governance. As Homa Bay prepares for the next electoral cycle, the departure of its deputy governor highlights the fragility of political partnerships and the challenges of balancing power within devolved units.

The county now awaits the appointment of a new deputy governor, a decision that will likely shape both the administration’s stability and ODM’s political strategy in the region.
