Storm Over Words: Petition Seeks to Remove Governor Mutahi Kahiga from Office

A political storm is brewing in Nyeri County after a petition was filed at the High Court seeking to declare Governor Mutahi Kahiga unfit for public office. The move follows a leaked video that sparked outrage nationwide.

“Kahiga’s Remarks Were Divisive” — Petitioners Demand Action

The petition, filed by Bunge la Mwananchi alongside Lawrence Oyugi, Komeade Bush, and Nicholas Kimanzi, accuses Kahiga of hate speech. They argue his comments were inflammatory and undermined national unity.

“The 1st respondent, Mutahi Kahiga, continues to hold a powerful and influential office,” the petition reads. “His continued presence provides him with a platform to repeat and amplify divisive utterances.”

The petitioners cited violations of Articles 10, 27, 28, 73, and 75 of the Constitution. These articles uphold values like integrity, equality, and dignity.

“Development Will Return to Mount Kenya” — Leaked Video Sparks Outrage

The controversy erupted after a video surfaced showing Kahiga suggesting that Raila Odinga’s death would redirect development from Nyanza to Mount Kenya.

“The demise of the former Prime Minister will bring back all development projects to our region,” Kahiga allegedly said.

The remarks triggered public fury, with many accusing the governor of ethnic bias and insensitivity.

“This Could Incite Violence” — Petitioners Warn of Dangerous Precedent

Petitioners warned that such statements could reignite ethnic tensions similar to the 2007/2008 post-election violence.

“These remarks risk stirring up clashes,” they stated. “We ask the court to bar Kahiga from making further inflammatory statements.”

They also urged the court to compel the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to investigate Kahiga.

“I Sincerely Apologise” — Governor Responds to Backlash

Following the backlash, Kahiga issued a public apology on October 18. He addressed the Odinga family and the nation during a press briefing.

“I want to sincerely apologise to our mourning nation,” Kahiga said. “To the family of the Rt. Hon Raila Odinga, Mama Ida, Rosemary, Junior, Winnie, Oburu, Ruth, and the Luo Nation.”

He also stepped down from his role as Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors.

“My Words Were Misunderstood” — Kahiga Clarifies Intent

Kahiga insisted his remarks were not celebratory. He claimed he was highlighting the imbalance in development under the current government.

“My remarks were in no way celebratory,” he clarified. “The loss of Raila sends everyone back to the drawing board.”

Despite the apology, the petitioners remain firm in their demand for accountability.

“Court Could Remove Him” — Legal Battle Begins

If the court upholds the petition, Kahiga could be suspended and removed from office. The case now awaits hearing as Kenyans watch closely.
