United Opposition Demands Governor Kahiga’s Resignation or Impeachment Over “Reckless” Remarks

Tensions are boiling in Nyeri County after the United Opposition Alliance called for the immediate resignation—or impeachment—of Governor Mutahi Kahiga. The uproar follows controversial remarks he made while appearing to celebrate someone’s death, sparking outrage across the country.

“Reckless and Unbecoming of a Leader”

Speaking on NTV, United Opposition Spokesperson Mukhisa Kituyi condemned Kahiga’s comments as deeply irresponsible and divisive.

“The sentiments were extremely irresponsible for national interests for a person holding high office to say such reckless utterances. We have to express our outrage; that’s why we find it necessary to dissociate ourselves,” Kituyi said.

He emphasized that Nyeri, a region with rich political history, deserves better leadership.

“Nyeri is an important part of the country and holds a very important place in the nation’s history. He should step down, and if that is not the case, then Nyeri has enough MCAs to start his impeachment. This is one of the best reasons why somebody should be impeached,” he added.

“He Has Never Been One of Us”

Kituyi clarified that Governor Kahiga has never been part of the United Opposition Alliance.

“He has never attended any of our meetings nor been assigned any role within the coalition,” he stated.

He then turned his attention to Kahiga’s party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), urging them to act.

“Let the party take action, and I think that a person who takes such an action should be dewhipped. There should be enough reason for him to step down,” Kituyi insisted.

“Primitive and Backward in 2025”

Thirdway Alliance leader Ekuru Aukot also weighed in, describing the governor’s remarks as outdated and dangerous.

“It is both primitive and backward for Governor Kahiga to make such remarks in 2025. It has brought a lot of ethnic tensions and hatred,” Aukot said.

He warned that such rhetoric could destabilize peace and unity in the region.

“If you saw the kind of reaction from the ODM side and also many Kenyans, people have called him names,” he added.

“Invoke Chapter Six Now”

Aukot urged Nyeri MCAs to act swiftly and uphold the Constitution.

“I am hoping that Nyeri MCAs will start an impeachment process,” he said.

As pressure mounts, the public is demanding accountability. Many believe Kahiga’s continued stay in office undermines public trust in leadership.
