Police Fire Back at Standard Media Over Claims DIG Lagat Is Behind Missing CHAN Millions
A fiery war of words erupted on Saturday, October 4, as the National Police Service (NPS) lashed out at Standard Media Group. The police accused the media house of spreading misleading claims about Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat and the alleged disappearance of millions meant for CHAN police allowances.
“This Is Character Assassination”—Police Defend DIG Lagat
NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga strongly condemned the Standard’s headline, “Lagat’s Fresh Storm,” calling it sensational and damaging.
“The alleged ‘facts’ reported are distortions that border on misinformation,” Nyaga stated. “They amount to personal attacks and character assassination,” he added.

The Standard had claimed Lagat was facing backlash from junior officers over missing per diems following the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
“Deployment Tripled”—Police Explain Budget Strain
To clarify, NPS revealed that the initial deployment of 2,986 officers was nearly tripled due to emerging security threats. Eventually, 8,546 officers were deployed to secure Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums.
“The exposé fails to mention key logistical costs,” Nyaga said. “Fuel, catering, and allowances for officers from outside Nairobi were major expenses,” he added.
The police insisted that the budget was stretched to accommodate the sudden increase in personnel.
“We Warn of Legal Action”—NPS Threatens Standard Media
In a bold move, NPS warned the media house of possible legal consequences. They accused Standard of reckless reporting and deliberate misinformation.
“Such claims could lead to civil remedial actions,” Nyaga cautioned. “We will not tolerate unfounded allegations,” he emphasized.

The police urged media outlets to verify facts before publishing stories that could damage reputations.
“He’s Already Under Pressure”—Lagat Faces Dual Storms
The controversy comes as DIG Lagat remains entangled in another high-profile case. He is still under scrutiny over the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody.
“Lagat is facing a fresh storm,” the Standard had reported. “His juniors are demanding answers,” the article claimed.
However, NPS dismissed the report as inflammatory and lacking context.
“We Demand Responsible Journalism”—Public Reacts to Clash
Kenyans have weighed in, with many demanding transparency and accountability from both the police and the media.
“We need facts, not drama,” said a Nairobi resident. “Media must inform, not inflame,” another added.
