Kenya Mourns Elijah Lagat: Former MP and Marathon Champion Dies After Short Illness

Kenya is mourning the loss of a national icon. Former Chesumei MP Elijah Lagat passed away on Tuesday, September 30, after a short illness. He was 60.

“We’ve Lost a Hero”—Governor Sang Leads Tributes

Nandi Governor Stephen Sang confirmed Lagat’s death and paid a heartfelt tribute to the former lawmaker and celebrated athlete.

“It is with deep sorrow and a profound sense of loss that we have learned of the passing of Elijah Lagat,” Sang stated. “He was a distinguished leader who served with humility and wisdom,” he added

Sang praised Lagat’s commitment to dialogue and inclusivity, noting his dedication to representing his constituents with integrity.

“He Never Gave Up”—Lagat’s Political Journey Inspired Many

Lagat first contested the Emgwen parliamentary seat in 2002 but lost to Stephen K. Tarus. Undeterred, he returned in 2007 and won on an ODM ticket.

“He regrouped and came back stronger. That’s who he was,” a supporter recalled.

In 2013, after Emgwen was split, Lagat contested Chesumei Constituency and won under the Jubilee Party. He became its first elected MP.

“From Classroom to Track”—Lagat’s Unlikely Rise to Athletic Fame

Before politics, Lagat worked as an educational administrator in the Ministry of Education. However, his passion for athletics led him down a different path.

Despite medical advice warning against running, Lagat defied odds and trained relentlessly. His breakthrough came in 2000 when he won the Boston Marathon.

“He clocked 2:07:41. That moment changed everything,” a sports analyst noted.

Earlier, Lagat had stunned the world by winning the Berlin Marathon, beating top Kenyan runners Erick Kimaiyo, Sammy Lelei, and Jackson Kipngok.

At the time of his death, Lagat served on the NACADA Board. He championed drug abuse prevention and youth empowerment.

“He believed in second chances. He fought for a better future,” a NACADA colleague shared.
