Autopsy Reveals Shocking Details in Boniface Kariuki’s Death
The family of Boniface Kariuki, a humble mask vendor and victim of the June 17 protests, is still in disbelief after a post-mortem report revealed horrifying details of his final moments.
Pathologist Dr. Peter Ndegwa, who carried out the autopsy alongside government expert Dr. Bernard Midia, delivered a chilling conclusion.
“The cause of death was severe head injuries due to a single gunshot,” Ndegwa stated.
“Four bullet fragments were found embedded deep inside the brain.”
The examination also confirmed a haunting detail: doctors had earlier removed two bullet fragments while Kariuki was still alive. Tragically, some remained lodged in his brain, making survival nearly impossible.

“The brain was deeply disturbed. His chances of surviving were extremely slim,” Ndegwa said.
Shot at Close Range — Confirmed by Video and Forensics
Further deepening the nation’s anguish, the report verified that Kariuki was shot at close range, matching the now-viral video that captured the shocking moment. In the footage, a police officer is seen aiming and firing directly at Kariuki’s head.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) attended the autopsy and is expected to file a report to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Pressure now mounts for swift action and justice.
Family in Tears as Burial Plans Move Ahead
Kariuki was pronounced dead on June 30 at 3:15 pm, according to his heartbroken father, Jonah Kariuki. After spending over a week in the ICU and being declared brain dead, hope slowly faded.
His sister had earlier shared the devastating news that her brother had never regained consciousness.
Now, the family prepares to bury him on Friday, July 11, in Kangema, Murang’a County.
“From Street Vendor to Symbol of Injustice”
Kariuki had been selling masks to earn an honest living. His life was cut short by a bullet during peaceful protests.

To support the grieving family, President William Ruto donated Ksh1 million, handed over by Kangema MP Peter Irungu Kihungi.
Meanwhile, two officers linked to the shooting were arraigned on June 5. However, the court adjourned the hearing to allow prosecutors to upgrade the charge from grievous harm to murder.
As Boniface is laid to rest, Kenyans demand one thing — justice must not be buried with him.
