DCI Arrests Mastermind After Greek Tourist Loses Ksh3.6M in Maasai Mara Scam
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the visitor landed in Nairobi on August 5, eager for a wildlife adventure.
He travelled to the Maasai Mara with his tour guide and a man he had befriended online.
Acquaintance Disappears Inside the Park
The new acquaintance, who called himself “Jeremiah John,” vanished mysteriously inside the park.

He left with the tourist’s three debit cards, a mobile phone, and a wristwatch.
“The suspect immediately began withdrawing huge sums from the victim’s accounts,” DCI stated.
By the time the spree ended, over €25,000—about Ksh3.6 million—was gone.
Alias Exposed, Suspect Tracked
Detectives moved fast.
Forensic tracking revealed “Jeremiah John” was a fake identity.
The real suspect was traced to a hidden location and cornered in a sting operation.
Luxury Items and Cash Recovered
During the arrest, officers seized luxury items believed to be bought with the stolen cash.
These included several high-end mobile phones, a Seiko Crystal wristwatch, and a brand-new touring trek bicycle.
They also found Ksh54,050 in cash and an undisclosed sum in US dollars.
The suspect is now held at Central Police Station awaiting court.
String of Scams Targeting Tourists
The incident came just two days after another arrest involving a Canadian national.
In that case, a suspect lured the investor into a fake gold export deal worth USD 618,000—about Ksh80.34 million.
“The suspect promised 250 kilograms of gold to be shipped to Dubai by private jet,” DCI revealed.
Instead, the investor was left with nothing, and the suspect pocketed the money.
DCI Warns Visitors and Locals
Investigators have urged both locals and foreigners to be cautious when making new acquaintances, especially online.
They stressed that criminals are targeting unsuspecting visitors using sophisticated deception.

“We remain committed to tracking and bringing to justice anyone targeting tourists in our country,” the DCI said.
For now, the Greek tourist’s stolen funds remain unrecovered, but detectives say the case is strong.
The arrest is expected to lead to charges soon.
