Youth Carrying Albert Ojwang’s Body Set Mawego Police Station on Fire
An intense wave of grief and fury swept through Homa Bay on Thursday as enraged youths carried the body of the late Albert Ojwang and set parts of Mawego Police Station ablaze.
With songs of sorrow, chants of justice, and hearts full of rage, the crowd stormed the station where Albert was first held after his arrest on June 7. The emotion-charged procession turned chaotic as mourners-turned-protesters torched sections of the station, igniting flames of anger that echoed across the country.

The firestorm comes just a day after a touching requiem mass at Ridgeways Baptist Church in Nairobi. Albert’s mother, Eucabeth Ojwang, moved mourners to tears with her heartfelt recollection.
“They took my Albert just when I had prepared lunch for him,” she said, her voice breaking. “He had not even taken a bite of ugali. When the police came, Albert trembled. I asked what was wrong. He said, ‘Mama, I have done nothing.’”
These words have pierced through the hearts of Kenyans and fueled public anger.
“This Was No Accident” – Legality Questioned
Albert’s transfer from Mawego to Nairobi raised major legal concerns. Critics have demanded clarity, questioning whether due process was followed.
During a tense Senate appearance, DCI boss Mohammed Amin defended the move.
“We do not require a court order to move a suspect from one jurisdiction to another,” Amin told senators.
“The deceased was booked out of Mawego Police Station at 1600 hours and into Central Police Station at 2132 hours.”
Still, many Kenyans remain unconvinced.
Spiritual Cleansing or Justice Ritual?
Locals believe the fiery act at Mawego was not just a protest. To them, it was also a spiritual cleansing—a way to prevent Albert’s soul from being disturbed by what they see as unjust and inhumane treatment.
“We carried his body to the station because this is where it all started,” said one mourner. “This fire is our voice. We want justice.”
Police Leadership Shaken
The pressure has already caused cracks. Following nationwide outrage, Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat stepped aside amid public demands for accountability.
