US Embassy Warns Citizens to Be on High Alert in Nairobi CBD Amid Protests
The U.S. Embassy in Kenya has issued a serious security advisory urging American citizens to stay away from Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) following violent protests that erupted on Thursday, June 12.
In the official travel alert, the U.S. Department of State warned of escalating chaos, noting that “unverified reports have indicated the use of tear gas and live ammunition.”
Americans Urged to Stay Away, Stay Alert
The Bureau of Consular Affairs advised all U.S. nationals in Kenya to avoid large crowds, stay indoors where possible, and notify family or friends of their whereabouts.
“Violent protests are currently underway in the CBD of Nairobi,” the alert read. “U.S. citizens should exercise extreme caution and avoid the area until the situation calms down.”
Additionally, Americans were told to always carry their U.S. passports and valid Kenyan visas when moving around, in case of police checks.

The protests, which started peacefully, spiraled into chaos by the afternoon. Crowds marched through major streets, chanting for justice over the death of social media activist Albert Ojwang, and slamming the 2025/2026 national budget, read earlier by Treasury CS John Mbadi.

Near Kenya Cinema, two vehicles were torched as demonstrators and police clashed.
Protest Turns Violent, Property Destroyed
Besides the heavy police response, some protestors vandalised property, including county bins recently installed across the city.
Meanwhile, police sealed off major roads like Harambee Avenue, while others deployed checkpoints along Thika Road to restrict movement into the CBD.
U.S. Urges Heightened Vigilance
The advisory also instructed Americans to keep vehicle doors locked and windows rolled up if they must travel.

“Stay off the roads if possible. Avoid government buildings. Monitor local media for updates,” the statement concluded.
While the Kenyan government is yet to issue a local travel restriction, the situation remains tense. Protesters have vowed to return to the streets until justice for Ojwang
