Boniface Mwangi Faces Arrest Warrant Over Alleged Assault of Police Officers Amid Torture Claims
A Nairobi court has issued a warrant of arrest against renowned activist and photojournalist Boniface Mwangi for failing to appear and answer to assault charges.
Mwangi is accused of attacking two police officers on separate dates while they were performing official duties at the Metropolitan Court in Kilimani.
Details of the Charges
According to court documents, the first count alleges that Mwangi assaulted Sergeant Osman Omar on April 20, causing actual bodily harm.
In the second charge, he allegedly attacked Police Constable Robert Oyola on April 2 at the same location. Again, the incident reportedly resulted in bodily injuries.
Additionally, Mwangi faces a third count of using abusive language against Sergeant Omar on April 2 with the intent to provoke a breach of peace.
Mwangi Claims He Was the Victim
Despite the charges, Mwangi had earlier shared his version of the events. On his official X account, he claimed that he was the one assaulted by police.
He narrated an encounter with three Kilimani officers on the night of April 2. According to him, they entered his office uninvited, citing a noise complaint.
“One officer, clearly drunk and chewing miraa, began roughing me up,” Mwangi alleged. “At some point, he even reached for his firearm.”
He continued, “I asked why a drunk officer was on duty with a gun. That’s when all hell broke loose. A violent scuffle followed.”
More Trouble Following Tanzania Ordeal
Mwangi’s court troubles come just weeks after his horrifying ordeal in Tanzania.
On May 22, he was airlifted to Nairobi from Ukunda, barely able to walk, after allegedly being tortured by Tanzanian Intelligence agents.
Speaking to the press on June 2, Mwangi offered graphic details of his abuse.
“They tied me upside down and beat my feet,” he said. “I screamed, but no tears came. They shoved underwear in my mouth and blasted gospel music to muffle my cries.”
He revealed he was also sodomised using objects during captivity.
Mwangi had traveled to Tanzania on May 19 to support opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who is facing treason charges.
Legal Proceedings Ahead
The court has scheduled the mention of the case for July 14. Until then, Mwangi’s future remains uncertain. The warrant could lead to his immediate arrest, intensifying the activist’s legal woes at home and abroad.
